About the exam

The Joint Entrance Examination (Main) is a computer-based test held in two sessions a year. Candidates may appear in one or both sessions; the better of the two scores counts.

Paper 1 is for B.E./B.Tech admissions. Paper 2A (B.Arch) and Paper 2B (B.Planning) are separate papers and are not covered by this sample page.

How scores are reported

Raw marks are converted to an NTA score (a percentile) for each shift, so candidates in different shifts can be compared. For a candidate with raw score xx in a shift of NN candidates:

NTA score=100×#{candidates with score≤x}N\text{NTA score} = 100 \times \frac{\#\{\text{candidates with score} \le x\}}{N}

Percentiles are calculated to seven decimal places to reduce ties.

Who can apply

  • Passed class 12 (or equivalent) in the last two years, or appearing this year.

  • Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, with Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject.

  • No age limit for JEE Main; institutes may set their own admission criteria.

For admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs

Candidates usually need at least 75% in class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of their board. Check the official information bulletin for the current rule.

Marking: marks for a correct / incorrect / unattempted question.

Sample pattern for local testing — verify with the official information bulletin. Each correct answer earns +4+4 and each wrong answer −1-1, so a candidate with cc correct and ww wrong answers scores 4c−w4c - w.

Preparation strategy

A simple preparation plan

  1. Finish the class 11 and 12 NCERT textbooks before moving to advanced problem books.

  2. Take one full-length mock test a week from three months before the exam, then two a week.

  3. Keep an error log and revise it before every mock test.

  4. Practise numerical-value questions: there is no option to guess from.

Frequently asked questions

Is this page official?

No. This is sample content for local testing. Always check the official JEE Main website.

How many times can I take JEE Main in a year?

Twice: the January and April sessions. The better score counts (sample answer).

Is there negative marking?

Yes, in this sample pattern a wrong answer costs one mark and an unattempted question costs nothing.

Do I need JEE Main for the IITs?

JEE Main qualifies candidates for JEE Advanced, which is the exam for IIT admissions.
